Vishnu is called the preserver In the Hindu trinity of Gods. He is the guardian of humanity and the preserver of the dharma (holy order of nature.) His role is to keep and sustain life bringing blessings and good fortune. It is said he has gone through many reincarnations the most popular of which is Krishna and Buddha. His name means of dark complexion and is often prayed to with the name Pundarikaksha which means eyes like lotus flowers. He holds a conch shell in one hand symbolizing the vibration of creation and the sacred sound of OM. His weapon is the Sudarsanacakra or discus (chakra), perhaps representative of his association with the sun but also, with its thousand spokes, symbolic of the wheel of time. He also holds a mace representing strength and power. In his other hand he holds a lotus flower symbolizing freedom from suffering, as well as the sweetness and beauty of life.
